36.04%Kei Nishikori recovered from a first-set tiebreak to beat Juncheng Shang 6-7(3) 6-3 6-4 in the Washington round of 32, holding serve perfectly while forcing two crucial breaks. The win extended Nishikori's farewell campaign and exposed Shang’s inability to convert late chances despite saving multiple break points.
Terence Atmane reversed three prior losses to Frances Tiafoe this season with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory in the Washington first round, turning a tight early match around by tightening his serving and converting the decisive return chances. The Frenchman moves into round two to meet Alejandro Tabilo.
Aleksandar Vukic, a qualifier, brushed aside lucky loser Zachary Svajda 6-3 6-1 in Washington’s Round of 32, converting four breaks while never facing a break point. Vukic’s serving - 12 aces and no double faults - and aggressive return depth closed the match in just over 50 minutes.
Third seed Taylor Fritz opened his Washington campaign with a straight-sets win over Zizou Bergs, using a heavy serve and flawless break-point defence to close out a 6-3, 6-4 victory. Fritz saved every break point he faced and converted two of Bergs’ four opportunities to tilt two tight sets in his favour.
Lorenzo Musetti returned from a layoff and needed just 40 minutes to close out his first match in Washington, leading Matteo Arnaldi 6-0, 3-1 before Arnaldi retired. The scoreline masked a straightforward day for Musetti, who held serve without facing a break point and imposed the tempo early.
Alejandro Tabilo ground out a 7-6(3) 4-6 6-4 win over Tallon Griekspoor in the Washington round of 32, prevailing in three tight sets after a decisive first-set tiebreak and a late break in the third. The left-hander’s aggression on key points separated the two on a high-pressure night.
