Open predictions desk →Ben Shelton defended his National Bank Open crown in Montreal, beating Brandon Nakashima 6-3, 7-6(4). Shelton’s serve stayed untroubled across both sets while timely returns and cleaner play in the tiebreak allowed him to close out a straight-sets win in a high-quality hard-court final.
Brandon Nakashima beat Rafael Jodar 7-6(3), 6-4 in the Montreal semifinal, converting the decisive break late in the second set after a first-set tiebreak. Nakashima’s clean serving and pressure returns on key points separated the two in what was otherwise a tight, low-margin match.
Ben Shelton dismantled Learner Tien 6-2, 6-3 in the Montreal semifinal, using a big, well-placed serve and composed hold-under-pressure to turn small margins into a straight-sets win. Tien’s serve unravelled at key moments, his five double faults and three breaks against him handing Shelton control of both sets.
Learner Tien moved through to the Montreal semifinals with a controlled 6-3, 6-2 win over Daniel Mérida Aguilar, converting consistent return pressure into four breaks while scarcely surrendering serve. The result extended Tien's hot hard-court run and left the Spaniard searching for more reliable serve responses at big stages.
Ben Shelton dispatched Jakub Mensik in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, advancing to the Montreal semifinals with a match in which he never faced a break point and converted four of six chances against Mensik. The defending champion leaned on steady holds and return pressure to close the contest in 82 minutes.
Rafael Jodar beat Arthur Fils 7-6(5) 6-3 in the Montreal quarterfinal, prevailing in a tense first-set tiebreak and then converting sustained return pressure into decisive advantage in the second. The victory follows a recent hard-court win over Fils and pushes Jodar into the semis with growing tour-level composure.
