Open predictions desk →Luca van Assche beat Alexander Blockx 6-4 4-6 7-5 in a close Estoril final, breaking late in the third to close out his first ATP Tour title. The match was decided by return depth and timely aggression while both players laboured with serve consistency on clay.
Alexander Blockx recovered from the brink, beating Luciano Darderi 5-7, 7-6(1), 7-6(5) in a two-hour, 45-minute Estoril semi-final to reach his first ATP Tour final. Blockx weathered repeated pressure on serve, flipped a missed match opportunity by Darderi in set two, and won two tie-breaks to close out the win.
Luca van Assche beat compatriot Hugo Gaston 6-4, 7-5 in the Estoril semifinal by backing aggressive returning and timely short-game variation with calm serving at the finish. Gaston injected angles and net approaches throughout but could not convert the high-leverage chances that would have stretched the match.
Luciano Darderi overturned a slow start to outlast Jaime Faria 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 in the Estoril quarterfinals, recovering from a 5-2 deficit in the second set and saving the vast majority of break points he faced. The Italian’s resilience carried him into a semifinal with Alexander Blockx.
Alexander Blockx edged Román Andrés Burruchaga 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in a tight Estoril quarterfinal, turning a handful of critical service moments in the decider. Blockx’s serve supplied more free points and he steadied on break-point moments late to secure the decisive break in set three.
Luca van Assche overturned a slow start to beat top seed Andrey Rublev 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the Estoril quarterfinals, registering the biggest win of his career and what reports call his first against a top-20 opponent. He saved nearly every break point he faced to grind out a two hour 15 minute victory.
